Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. When she was a girl, Ford was battling obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teens and joined National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good fit there. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy that was added to her portfolio in the year 1996.
